King Princess sings blazing single ‘Let Us Die’ on ‘Fallon’

King Princess, the project of songwriter Mikaela Straus, delivered an audience-friendly performance of the single “Let Us Die” The Tonight Show Tuesday. The sizzling song comes from Straus’ second album hold on babywhich rolling stone praised for his adept investigations of “enduring the harshness of the world with moments of musical and lyrical beauty.”

On the record, “Let Us Die” features a performance by the late Taylor Hawkins on drums, and Straus recalled her experience working with the Foo Fighters drummer in a recent social media post. “Taylor was not only ready to play the song, but he was the most encouraging and amazing presence during that session,” she wrote on Instagram. “At one point I started sobbing and Mark [Ronson] couldn’t stop smiling. I’ve never felt so happy.” (During King Princess’ Tonight Show Outwardly, Hawkins’ contributions to the song were honored with a subtle tribute: the name “Taylor” displayed on a kick drum.)

“Let Us Die” was preceded by the album singles “Change the Locks”, “Cursed”, “Too Bad” and “For My Friends”. While hold on baby has a variety of high-profile collaborators — in addition to Hawkins, it offers production and songwriting assistance from Mark Ronson and the National’s Aaron Dessner — Straus told rolling stone in a recent interview that her influence and creative style remains at the forefront of the record. “I am at the helm of this ship,” she says. “Otherwise it wouldn’t be my music.”
